Brookleyn, NY - New York Police Office Rockie Convicted of Manslaughter



The State of New York charged New York police officer Peter Liang with manslaughter and official misconduct in the fatal shooting of Akai Gurley, age 28, in 2014.



Liang discharged his service firearm in the stair well of a building. The bullet hit and killed Gurley, who was not the intended target. The officers then engaged in an argument about who should call in the shooting for four minutes while Gurley lay dying.



In defense, Liang's attorneys argued that Liang acted appropriately under the circumstance and immediately started trying to get help for Gurley when he learned that his bullet had hit him.
Outcome:
Defendant was found guilty after 19 hours of deliberation.
