Description: Tulsa, Oklahoma - The United States of America charged Shannon James Kepler, age 60, with first degree murder in Indian Country, causing death by using and discharging a firearm during and in relation to crimes of violence and assault with a dangerous weapon in Indian country for shooting and killing Jeremy Lake, age 19, in 2014.
Defendant claimed self defense and also asserted statute of limitations as a defense to some of the charges. He claimed that Lake had a gun when he was shot and killed.
A gun was found in a trash can in a Tulsa Police Department headquarters interview room.
Kepler's conviction of manslaughter in the State District Court was nullified as a result of the decision by the United States Supreme Court in McGrit v. Oklahoma.
Outcome: Kepler was found guilty of the lesser include office of second-degree murder and of one count of assault with a deadly weapon in connection with shots fired at another person.
