Tinas Carusilla, the mother of Nick Carusillo, sued Metro Atlanta Recovery Residences (MARR) on a negligence theory claiming that the drug and alcohol treatment center failed to exercise due care when it discharged him abruptly in 2017.
Nick Carusillo was killed when he was hit by a car on a Georgia Interstate shortly after his discharge. The 29-year-old had suffered from bipolar disease for much of his adult life.
Outcome: Plaintiff's verdict for $77 million including $10 million for decedent's pain and suffering, $55 million for the value of his life and $1 million in punitive damages.
