In addition to litigation, a significant portion of his practice involves advice on policy design and implementation to avoid litigation. Bill has conducted numerous seminars and workshops for both Bar and trade association groups, including annual HR updates for the North Carolina Bankers Association for the past 25+ years. His experience includes statutory claims (including Title VI, ADEA, ADA, FMLA, FLSA, NLRA, ERISA, WARN), contract claims (including confidentiality agreements and covenants not to compete), and common law claims (defamation, interference with contractual relations, negligent and intentional infliction of emotional distress, negligent hiring and retention, invasion of privacy, assault, battery, workplace violence, duties of loyalty, and fiduciary duties). In recent years, Bill has also been involved in several merger/acquisition projects where labor and employment issues were significant elements in the transactions as well as disputes in closely held corporations where ownership and employment issues overlap. Bill is also on the approved mediator list for the United States District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina and serves frequently in that capacity. Although not a state "certified" mediator, he occasionally serves in state cases (when selected by the parties). He has generally limited his mediation practice to labor and employment cases. He was involved in the EEOC pilot mediation program, which lead to the nationwide adoption of mediation by the EEOC. Bill's interests and practice are not limited to these specialized areas, and as a result he has also had experience with litigation on a variety of subjects (including environmental, construction, and commercial disputes) and serves as general counsel to a variety of entities (including a multi-state manufacturing concern, the Greensboro United Arts Council, and a regional catering and food consultant).
