He served as a clerk for the 1st District of Ohio Court of Appeals. He was admitted to the bar in Ohio in 1994 and the U.S. District Court, Southern District of Ohio in 1995. Mr. Smyth is a graduate of the Cincinnati Academy of Leadership for Lawyers Class VII. Every year since 2005, Mr. Smyth has been named a Super Lawyers Rising Star, honoring the top 2.5 percent of lawyers who are under the age of 40. Although born in Pittsburgh, he grew up in Middletown and Cincinnati. He and his wife have three small children and he also enjoys genealogy.
