Description: Buffalo, New York criminal defense lawyer represented the Defendant charged with counterfeiting.

Between December 2022, and March 2023, Eric M. Butson, from Buffalo, New York, and co-defendant Catalina Hernandez possessed various tools and equipment necessary to make and manufacture counterfeit bills including computers, ink-jet printers, ink, and bleach. Utilizing those tools and equipment, they made and manufactured numerous counterfeit $100 bills. Butson and Hernandez passed, or attempted to pass, the bills approximately 67 times at various businesses, including in the City of Buffalo, the Town of Amherst, the Town of Clarence, and the Village of Orchard Park. The total loss amount, including actual loss and intended loss, is approximately $6,700.

The sentencing is the result of an investigation by the United States Secret Service, under the direction of Special Agent-in-Charge Jeffrey Burr, Homeland Security Investigations, under the direction of Special Agent-in-Charge Matthew Scarpino, and the New York State Police, under the direction of Major Eugene Staniszewski.

18:371.F CONSPIRACY TO DEFRAUD THE UNITED STATES

18 U.S.C. 473 provides: Whoever buys, sells, exchanges, transfers, receives, or delivers any false, forged, counterfeited, or altered obligation or other security of the United States, with the intent that the same be passed, published, or used as true and genuine, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than 20 years, or both.

Outcome: Defendant was sentenced to the custody of the Bureau of Prisons for a term of 24 months. Defendant shall be placed on supervised release for 3 years. Restitution in the amount of $6,000.00 imposed as detailed in Criminal Judgment. $100 Special Penalty Assessment imposed.
