Jose Santiago Cruz, 38, Oaxaca, Mexico, was sentenced to 30 months in federal prison for illegally reentering the United States after being deported. Santiago Cruz pleaded guilty to this charge on April 27, 2016.

Santiago Cruz first entered the United States in approximately 1990. In 1997, he was convicted of trafficking cocaine in Wake County, N.C., and was sentenced to 35 – 42 months imprisonment. The defendant was deported from the United States to Mexico in July 2000, after serving his prison term.

Between July 12 and August 18, 2013, Santiago Cruz was arrested three times for driving under the influence in Taylor County, Wis. Following his convictions for these offenses, he became a fugitive. He was arrested in 2015, and subsequently began serving his sentence for the DUIs. In February 2016, he was indicted on the federal charge for which he is being sentenced today.

The charge against Santiago Cruz was the result of an investigation conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Outcome: Defendant was sentenced to 30 months in federal prison for illegally reentering the United States after being deported.
