Description: Baltimore, MD - The State of Maryland charged Stephen Michaell Cooke, Jr., age 44, with first-degree murder, solicitation of murder and conspiracy to commit murder for killing Heidi Bemadzikowski on April 20, 2000. Prosecutors claimed that Cooke hired tAlexander C. Bennett and Grant A. Lewis from Colorado to kill his girlfriend to get her life insurance. DNA evidence led authorities to a Colorado man who eventually told police that he was hired by Cooke to kill Bemadzikowski. Bennett testified against Cooke after pleading guilty.
Outcome: Defendant was found guilty and faces a sentence of life in prison without parole.
