Beyond his legal practice, Tiernan also volunteers as an arbitrator for the Heartland Chapter of the Better Business Bureau. Cases brought for arbitration before BBB include lemon law claims, construction disputes and all manner of claims between business and consumers. Also, Tiernan is approved as a panel hearing officer for the Omaha and Lincoln School Districts for hearings concerning the amendment, termination or non-renewal of teachers' and administrators' employment contracts.

Tiernan is a member of the Iowa Bar Association, the Nebraska Bar Association (member: Public Service Civil Practice and Procedure Committees), and a member of the Omaha Bar Association. He has handled cases and appeals that have been published by the Iowa and Nebraska Supreme Courts and he is a frequent lecturer and presenter to employers and companies regarding general litigation issues and workers' compensation matters in Iowa and Nebraska.
