Sixteen Landowners sued Markel Insurance Co., JJJ Recreation, Lake of the Woods Campground, American Family Mutual Insurance Co., and Jeffrey Knaack on negligence and other theories for the damages and injuries that they claimed that they sustained as a result of the Crystal Lake fire that destroyed some 570 acres of timber and grass in Marquette and Waushara counties more than three years ago. The fire that came to be known as the Crystal Lake fire started nearly six weeks after Knaack burned debris at Lake of the Woods Campground in March of 2003. It started in northern Marquette County and cut a swath through to southern Waushara County on April 14, 2003.
Defendants denied wrongdoing.
