James Anderson sued his neighbors on intentional tort and intentional infliction of emotional distress theories claiming that they shot and killed his English springer spaniel "Chucky" who he claimed was shot and killed by them while they were trapshooting in March 2014 and then concealing what they had done. Plaintiff claimed that he suffered emotional distress as a direct result of the death of the dog, which he claimed knew 100 words, like to ride on his motorcycle and could climb ladders.

Editor's Comment: Verdicts of this magnitude for the deaths of domestic pets are very unusual because the law generally limits damages to the fair market value of the animal. Mr. Karp apparently convinced the presiding judge to allow the jury to award emotional injury damages to Mr. Anderson.
