"A Philadelphia Common Pleas Court jury has rejected a public-relations consultant's contention that he was slandered in a termination letter written by the head of the African American Museum.
After an eight-day trial, the jury decided Tuesday that Romona R. Benson's letter did not constitute libel or slander of Joel Avery. Avery's lawsuit said the letter had accused him of violating "professional ethics" by widely distributing internal e-mails. At the trial, Benson acknowledged her accusation was incorrect. Avery contended it had ended his career in the hospitality industry.
Ernest Jones, chairman of the museum's board, issued a statement yesterday thanking Benson's attorney, Wendi D. Barish, and saying, "The verdict completely exonerates Romona and the museum."
Stephen R. Bolden, Avery's attorney, said, "We are going to file posttrial motions because we do not believe the jury's verdict is supported by the evidence." - Nathan Gorenstein"
