Description:

Estate of Howard R. Hoehmann Sr. sued James S. Vela and Stephan Goodman on a malpractice theory for his wrongful death. They claimed that the defendants acted below the standard of care in treating him for an infection that he developed after her entered the hospital for treatment pneumonia in April 2000. His condition worsened condition worsened and he developed toxic megacolon. He died April 21, 2000. The Plaintiffs claimed that the defendant doctors failed to perform appropriate tests to establish that he had developed colitis from the antibiotics that he had been given.

The defendants denied that they acted below the standard of care in treating Hoehmann and that that he died as a result of any care that they provided.

Outcome:
Plaintiffs' verdict for $750,000 for his pain and suffering and $70,000 for related damages and expenses.
