Description:
The State of Minnesota charged former police Sgt. David Clifford, age 48, with first, their and fifth-degree felony assault and batter in conjunction with an altercation between Clifford and Vander Lee in a bar on June 16, 2012.. Clifford hit the victim in the face with the result that he fell backward and hit his head on the floor of the bar. The victim sustained a severe brain injury with the result that he had three brain surgeries that left him unable to recognize himself and cannot retain new memories.

Clifford, who was off duty at the time of the incident, claimed self defense.
Outcome:
Defendant was found guilty and faces seven years in prison when sentenced.
