Description:
Medical malpractice - Improper performance of amniocentesis results in injury to fetus. Sandy Kirland went into premature labor in August, 1995. She was taken to Wood River Medical Center in Sun Valley, Idaho for care. She was sent to Dr. Donald for an amniocentesis to check on the baby's status. During the procedure, Dr. Donald
hit the fetus which caused it to begin bleeding with the result that it lost half of its blood supply. When the baby's condition was diagnosed, an emergency C-section was performed but Bryce Quinn Kirkland had already sustained severe brain damage with resulting spastic quadriplegia.
Outcome:
Jury verdict for Bryce Kirkland for $29.72 million, including $11 million in economic damages, finding Dr. Donald 75% and Wood River 25% at fault with a finding that Dr. Donald was reckless. The jury returned a defendant's verdict for Dr. Corriell.
