Pat Ross and Carmen Gordon sued eight long-time members of the nation's second-oldest black sorority Delta Sigma Theta on a libel theory claiming that statements published by the defendants asserting that Ross exercised poor management while she served as sorority president and more than $100,000 went missing. They also claimed Ross and Gordon schemed to cover up the losses but had not taken any of the cash. All the money eventually was returned. Ross contended that the eight defendants were bitter old women driven by hatred and anger toward Gordon and Pat Ross, who is his sister, when they wrote the letter. He contended the letter was untrue and misleading and was intended to defame the two women and to run Ross out of the sorority.
Defendants asserted true as a defense
