Alfredo Gonzalez-Pelaez, 42, was encountered by a Border Patrol agent conducting a field inspection. Gonzalez-Pelaez acknowledged to the officer that he was an alien who had illegally entered the United States years earlier. Immigration records showed that he had previously been removed from the U.S. in 2012 and did not have a visa or other documentation that would allow him to re-enter the country.

Gonzalez-Pelaez faces up to two years in prison and a maximum fine of $250,000. He will be sentenced after the completion of a presentence investigative report by the U.S. Probation Office. A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

The U.S. Border Patrol investigated the case.
