Former Culpeper County, Virginia, Sheriff Scott Jenkins was accused of giving civilians police badges in exchange for thousands of dollars, amassing more than $75,000 in bribes. According to prosecutors, he made unvetted D.C.-area business owners unpaid auxiliary deputies, which gave them police powers. The business owners wanted to be able to avoid traffic tickets and be able to carry concealed firearms without a permit.
