In 2021, a grand jury charged Eric Roberts, Ronald McGuire, Lowell Sargent, Christopher Shaun Ragle, and Philip Lala, alongside ten co-defendants, in a six-count superseding indictment for their respective roles in a large drug-trafficking organization. The scheme was simple: the defendants would purchase marijuana from states in which it had been legalized, often California and Oregon, and distribute it throughout twenty-one other states.

The five appellants went to trial—where eight of their co-defendants testified against them—and all were convicted of conspiracy to commit money laundering and conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute marijuana, among individualized charges.
