Description:
Syracuse, New York bankruptcy lawyers represented the Petitioner seeking bankruptcy protection.

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Syracuse and its insurers have agreed to a multi-million dollar settlement with over 400 survivors of sexual abuse by clergy and other church employees

The settlement, finalized in August 2025 after a five-year bankruptcy case, provides for a total compensation fund of over $170 million.

Timeline of the case

2019: The Child Victims Act temporarily suspends the statute of limitations in New York State, allowing hundreds of survivors of child sexual abuse to file lawsuits against the Diocese of Syracuse.

2020: The diocese files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the face of numerous abuse allegations and lawsuits.

July 2023: The diocese announces a $100 million settlement with over 100 survivors. The diocese contributes $50 million, local parishes contribute $45 million, and other Catholic entities contribute $5 million to a trust fund for victims.

April 2025: Several of the diocese's insurers agree to pay an additional $60 million to settle claims, bringing the total compensation to over $160 million.

August 2025: A U.S. Bankruptcy Judge approves the final bankruptcy plan, which secures a total settlement pool of over $170 million for the 411 survivors. The judge praises the survivors for their courage.

Scope of the abuse: The abuse allegations involved clergy members and other church employees over many years.

Settlement amount: The final settlement fund totals $176.1 million, which will be distributed to the 411 abuse survivors. This includes contributions from the diocese, its parishes, and its insurers.

Court action: U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Wendy A. Kinsella approved the final plan after navigating complexities created by a U.S. Supreme Court ruling on third-party releases in bankruptcy cases.

Diocese's response: The Diocese of Syracuse's bishop has apologized for the abuse and any mishandling of past allegations. The diocese has pledged to continue and improve its child protection protocols.

Survivor reaction: While the settlement provides a measure of justice, it does not erase the trauma of the past. Some survivors and their lawyers shared emotional moments in the courtroom after the final approval, viewing it as a major step toward closure.

Outcome:
The bankruptcy judge accepted the Diocese of Syracuse plan for handling $175 million in debt. Fifty million dollars will come from the diocese itself, with $45 million from parishes and $5 million from “other Catholic entities” associated with the Syracuse Diocese. The remaining $76 million will be contributed by diocesan insurance companies.
