Description:

Elyria, OH - Gibson Brothers, Inc., Allyn W. Gibson and David R. Gibson sued Oberlin College and Meredith Raimondo on defamation, negligence and respondeat superior theories claiming that Raimondo, the College's Dean of Students, it was damaged by actions taken by Raimondo in response to an incident at the Plaintiff's business involving a shoplifting incident in 2016 in which an Oberlin student tried to use false identification to buy alcohol.

The student involved in the incident were charged with a misdemeanor and pleaded guilty.

The students are black and the owner of the bakery is white.

The Defenses asserted by the Defendants are not available.

Outcome:

Plaintiff's verdict for $11 million in compensatory damages and $33.2 million in punitive damages. Ohio law limits punitive damages to twice the economic damages.

Judge Miraldi reduced the award to $25 million.
