The Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) is a civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life, including employment, education, transportation, and public accommodations. The law was passed in 1990 and has been amended several times since then.
The ADA defines a disability as a "physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities." Major life activities include such things as walking, seeing, hearing, speaking, breathing, learning, and working.
The ADA prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in a variety of ways. For example, the law requires employers to provide reasonable accommodations to employees with disabilities, such as modifying a job or providing a TTY for an employee who is deaf. The law also requires public accommodations to make their facilities accessible to individuals with disabilities, such as providing ramps and accessible restrooms.
The ADA is an important law that protects the rights of individuals with disabilities. If you believe that you have been discriminated against because of your disability, you should contact the EEOC or your state's civil rights agency.
