Named �Champion of Justice� in 2015 by the Washington Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, Chris Carney has represented more than a thousand clients throughout his career, achieving positive results in trials of dozens of criminal and civil cases.

Teaming up with the the ACLU of Washington, the Public Defender Association, and Disability Rights Washington, Chris litigated a class-action lawsuit that led a federal judge to order the State of Washington to stop unconstitutionally denying mentally ill jail inmates their right to timely evaluations and treatment to determine if they are competent to stand trial.

Chris served as lead trial counsel in a civil rights and medical malpractice case against King County Jail, which neglected a mentally ill pregnant woman until she gave birth alone in her jail cell. The jury awarded Imka Pope nearly $1 million, finding the jail and staff members guilty of eight state and federal claims.

Working in cooperation with the Innocence Project Northwest, Chris has twice helped free innocent people who had spent years in prison for crimes they did not commit.

A former King County public defender, Chris was admitted to Western Washington�s panel of privately contracted federal public defenders in 2014. He has been practicing law since he graduated from the University of Washington School of Law in 2000. He is a founding partner of Carney Gillespie Isitt PLLP.
