A native of Newton, Iowa, Joel attended Dordt College in Sioux Center, Iowa where he earned a B.A. in Political Science in 1999. In 2002, he earned his J.D. with highest distinction from the University of Iowa College of Law, where he also served as a Managing Editor of the Journal of Corporation Law and was named to the Order of the Coif. After graduation, Joel joined the firm and in January of 2008, became a partner.

Joel is a member of the American, Iowa State, State of South Dakota and Woodbury County Bar Associations and is admitted to practice in Federal Court, the Northern District of Iowa, the District of South Dakota and in the Eight Circuit Court of Appeals.

Joel's practice is a general practice including, but not limited to, business, real estate, wills, trusts, estate planning, and probate law. He is a member of the Siouxland Estate Planning Council.

Joel enjoys playing his clarinet alongside his wife, Christine in the Sioux City Municipal Band. He and his wife are the proud parents of a son, Josiah Daniel. Being a parent means that free time is mostly nonexistent, but enjoys grilling and anything related to the Iowa Hawkeyes. Joel is a member of the Friendship Community Church, where he leads the Praise and Worship Team.
