In 2003, one of these cases went to trial and the plaintiff was awarded a $5.5 million jury verdict. The decision was later appealed by the tobacco company and then remitted to $500,000. This has been the first and so far, only case of it's kind to be successful and has been discussed in the Washington Post, New York Times, and the Wall Street Journal.
