Additional Information: Geoffrey E. Spofford is a 1989 graduate of Northeastern University School of Law. Since then he has been engaged in the general practice of law in Worcester and Worcester County. His primary focus has been in trial work, both criminal and civil, as well as criminal appellate practice. He has tried jury and non-jury cases at all levels of the Massachusetts Court system and has a number of reported decisions before the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court and Massachusetts Appeals Court. Attorney Spofford has accepted numerous appointments as attorney for a party or as guardian ad litem in child custody cases in the Probate Court involving the possible termination of parental rights. In 1996 Attorney Spofford represented a thirty-four year man seeking the right to be permitted to die. This young man had suffered a brain stem stroke which left him unable to voluntarily move any muscles in his body, except his eyes, despite the fact that he was fully conscious. Through expert testimony, Attorney Spofford established the man's competency and obtained an Order from the Probate Court entitling the young man to refuse medical treatment, including nutrition and hydration. The case drew widespread attention shortly before the client's death as a result of an article in the Worcester Telegram and Gazette. For his efforts on behalf of his client, Attorney Spofford was awarded the Worcester County Bar Association's President's Award in June 1997. In 1998 Attorney Spofford represented the first juvenile in the country charged with illegally accessing a government protected computer in violation of the United States Code. The case involved a juvenile computer hacker who disabled the airport runway lights at the Worcester Airport as well as the emergency response system. This case drew national Media attention and was featured on National Public Radio's "All Things Considered." Attorney Spofford has been actively involved in the Massachusetts Bar Association and the Worcester County Bar Association. He has served on and chaired several committees and sections. He has been involved in the community serving on the Board of Directors of the Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Worcester County, Inc. He has also served as a corporator for Community Health Link, Inc. which provides medical assistance for needy individuals in Central Massachusetts.
