JOHN TAYLOR HEBDEN is an associate in the energy and litigation practice groups in the Washington, D.C. office. In particular, John assists clients in the oil, natural gas and electricity industries in regulatory proceedings before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
John also maintains an active pro bono practice. John was part of a team representing as amici former military leaders and members of Congress who supported the challenge to same-sex marriage bans in Obergefell v. Hodges, in which the U.S. Supreme Court held that the Fourteenth Amendment guarantees same-sex couples the fundamental right to marry. John has also represented clients in immigration court, state environmental proceedings, and veterans appeals.
John earned his law degree, cum laude, from the University of Michigan Law School, where he was a contributing editor for the University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform. Prior to joining Sidley, John served as a judicial extern to the Honorable Joan H. Lefkow of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. Prior to attending law school, John worked and assistant-taught at the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in Qatar.
John also holds a Master of Theological Studies from Harvard University and a B.S. in Foreign Service, cum laude, from Georgetown University.
