Teresa A. Mata represents clients in a variety of legal matters to include employment law, labor law, school law, personal injury, general civil litigation and domestic relations cases. Ms. Mata regularly represents employers in state and federal district court cases. Ms. Mata prepares pleadings, motions, memoranda and performs legal research and analysis on a variety of legal issues.


Ms. Mata obtained her undergraduate degree in English from the University of Kansas. The summer going into her senior year of undergraduate studies, Ms. Mata completed coursework in Spanish at Menendez Pelayo International University in Barcelona, Spain.


While attending Washburn University School of Law, Ms. Mata was a three-year recipient of the Dawson Scholarship. Ms. Mata served as the Vice-President for the Washburn Law student organization, Equal Justice Works, where she helped organize and attend two separate public service trips to New Orleans, Louisiana. During those trips, Ms. Mata conducted sociological surveys, analyzed the juvenile justice system, interviewed local businesses and prepared ready-to-go projects in support of the proposed bill, Gulf Coast Civil Works Project, H.R. 4048. In the 2010 spring semester, Ms. Mata was awarded the Irvine E. Ungerman Award for her work in the Washburn Law Clinic.


Prior to joining the Kansas City office of McAnany, Van Cleave & Phillips, P.A., Ms. Mata worked in Emporia, Kansas as a staff attorney with Kansas Legal Services where she practiced in the areas of felony criminal defense, juvenile offender, child in need of care (CINC), care and treatment, protective orders, domestic advocacy including divorce representation, paternity actions and adoptions. While working for Kansas Legal Services, Ms. Mata managed a large caseload and served as a Core Member with SOS, a non-profit organization serving victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and neglect.


Ms. Mata is a graduate of Class 27 of Leadership 2000 and serves as a board member for the Downtown Shareholders in Kansas City, Kansas. Ms. Mata lives in Fairway, Kansas with her husband and Welsh Terrier. In February 2013, Ms. Mata attended Carnival in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She enjoys traveling, reading, dancing and watching movies.
