The family and estate of Serenity Deal sued the Oklahoma Department of Human Services on a negligence wrongful death theory claiming that employees of the Defendant negligently recommended that the child be placed in the custody of his biological father who subsequently killed her in 2011.

Sean Devon Brooks pled guilty to first-degree murder and was sentenced to life in prison.

The social workers were fired and per charged with suppressing evidence and pleaded guilty to misdemeanors.

Outcome: Settled for $475,000.00.
