Description: Dayton, Ohio criminal defense lawyer represented defendant charged with felony possession of a firearm and ammunition.

In February 2020, Dayton police officers were investigating the circumstances of a firearm visible in a vehicle that was running but not occupied near the Uptown Lounge on West Third Street in Dayton.

Aaron Spencer Doakes, age 33, of Dayton, returned to the vehicle with the vehicle’s key fob in hand but fled on foot from law enforcement. As he ran, Doakes discarded a Glock 9mm magazine that was loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition.

Doakes was apprehended and detained. The magazine matched the firearm in the vehicle.

While executing subsequent search warrants, officers discovered four additional firearms and nearly $10,000 in cash that was in Doakes’s residence and on his person.

Doakes pleaded guilty in September 2021 to possessing a firearm after being convicted of a felony crime. His prior convictions include various violent assaults, including with a deadly weapon.

William Rivers, Special Agent in Charge, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Cincinnati Division; and Dayton Police Chief Kamran Afzal announced the sentence imposed by U.S. District Court Judge Michael J. Newman. Assistant United States Attorney Ryan A. Saunders is representing the United States in this case.

Outcome: Defendant was sentenced to 100 months in prison.
