Hammond, IN - The United States of America charged John Buncich, age 74, with wire fraud.

Buncich was re-sentenced to 151 months imprisonment, 1 year of supervised release, $800 in restitution and a $35,000 fine. Buncich agreed to forfeiture in the amount of $38,000.00 as part of this federal prosecution

U.S. Attorney Kirsch said, “Buncich betrayed the public trust when he took bribes for personal gain. The sentence imposed today should send a strong message of deterrence to others who might consider engaging in the same illegal conduct as Buncich. We will continue to be vigilant and aggressive in our efforts to root out public corruption wherever it exists across the district.”

This case was the result of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigation Division. This case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Philip C. Benson and Maria N. Lerner. This re-sentencing proceeding was handled by Assistant United States Attorney Philip C. Benson.

Outcome: (Resentencing held on 8/05/20) The defendant is committed to the custody of the U.S. Bureau of Prisons to be imprisoned for a total term of 151 months, consisting of a term of 151 months on counts 4 and 5 and a term of 120 months on count 6, all to be served concurrently. Upon release from imprisonment, the defendant is placed on supervised release for a total term of 1 year, consisting of a term of 1 year on each of counts 4,5 and 6, all to run concurrently. The Court orders the defendant to make restitution to Lake County, Indiana in the amount of $800.00, to pay a fine of $35,000 and to pay a Special Assessment of $300.00.

The defendant is committed to the custody of the U.S. Bureau or Prisons to be imprisoned for a total term of 188 months, consisting of a term of 188 months on each of Counts 1,2,3,4 and 5 and a term of 120 months on Count 6, all to be served concurrently with each other.
