State of Washington v. GEO Group

Case Number:

Judge: Robert Bryan

Court: United States District Court for the Western District of Washington (Pierce County)

Plaintiff's Attorney: Washington Attorney General's Office

Defendant's Attorney: Unknown

Description: Tacoma, WA: Employment law lawyers represented Plaintiffs who sued Defendant for failing to pay minimum wages to them for working in a immigrant detention facility.

The Plaintiffs in this case were immigrant detainees who worked at a detention facility located in Washington state.

The State of Washington claimed that the GEO Group unjustly profited by running the Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma — now known as the Northwest ICE Processing Center — on the backs of captive workers.

GEO Group paid the detainees $1 a day.

“Immigrants held in GEO’s for-profit facilities are not criminals and should not be beholden to enriching the corporation’s bottom line,” according to one lawyer who represented the victims individually.

Outcome: Judgement in favor of Plaintiff for $17.3 million.
