Case Style: The People of the State of California v. Juan Carlos Orozco

Case Number: 10F05904

Judge: Greta Curtis Fall

Court: Superior Court, Sacramento County, California

Plaintiff's Attorney: Hilary Bagley Franzoia

Defendant's Attorney: Public Defender

Description: The People of the State of California charged Juan Carlos Orozco with first degree murder in conjunction with the torture-and-murder of Glane Joseph May, age 69, on August 26, 2010.

May lived in the same apartment house as Orozco's girlfriend who kicked him out of her apartment. Orozco had injected meth. The State claimed that he broke into May's apartment looking for money. He tied May up with an electric cord, put two plastic bags over his head and used a flat-head screwdriver to poke 22 holes in May's face, neck and chest. He then rapped a belt around the man's neck and cinched it as tight as he could.

Orozco testified in his own defense and denied that he had anything to do with May's death and that he found the keys to May's car in the parking lot and was only trying to return them when he found May dead in his apartment.

Outcome: Defendant was found guilty with a finding that Orozco should be sentenced to no-parole life in prison.
