Description:

Governmental Tort Wrongful Death claim by the family of Devaughn Darling, a Florida State University football player who collapsed and died Feb. 26, 2001, of an apparent "cardiac arrhythmia" at the age of 18. His family claimed that their son died despite complaining of dizziness and chest pains during a workout.

Outcome: Settled for $2 million. (The University paid the statutory maximum allowed under Florida law of $200,000. The State Legislature will have to pass special legislation, if it choses to do so, funding the balance of the settlement.)
