Description:

Carlos Amado, age 50, sued Microsoft Corporation for patent infringement for infringing a patent he received in 1994 for software linking the company's excel spreadsheet and access database programmes. Amado offered to licence the technology to Microsoft in shortly after he received the patent but Microsoft declined his offer but added the same functionality to its office suite of produced shortly thereafter.

The defenses asserted by Microsoft to Amado's claim are not available.

Outcome: Plaintiff's verdict for $9 million.
