Bobby Maxwell sued Kerr-McGee Chemical Worldwide, LLC under the False Claims Act (qui tam) on behalf of the United States Department of Interior claiming that defendant underpaid the U.S. Treasury $7.5 million in royalty payments for oil leases in the Gulf of Mexico. Maxwell, a former Interior Department Minerals Management Service auditor quit his job in order to sue Anadarko Petroleum and expose a "cozy relationship between Big Oil and the government."
