Description: The parents of a child molested by a former Olympia School District bus driver sued the school district on a negligence theory claiming the school negligently failed to prevent the abuse. Plaintiff claimed that the school district failed to follo its own "safety rule" that stated that "staff interactions with students must serve an educational purpose" in allowing Shafer to ride next to children.

The Defendant denied fault and claimed that the driver, Gary Shafer, age 33, was riding as a “helper” on the way home from Centennial Elementary School in late December 2010 to learn the route

Outcome: Plaintiff's verdict for $1.4 million.
