The family and estate of Korryn Gaines sued Baltimore County and Royce Ruby on excessive for theories that he did not have good cause to shoot and kill her.

The 2016 death of Korryn Gaines came at the end of six-hour standoff in her apartment.

Cpl. Royce Ruby and his partner had attempted to serve warrants on Gaines and her fiance that day. They determined that Gaines was in the apartment and when she would not open the door they kicked it in and were confronted by Gaines who pointed a shotgun at them. The fiance left with the infant daughter but Gaines remained in the apartment with her 5-year-old son.

The shot that killed Gaines also wounded the boy.

Outcome: Plaintiffs' verdict for $32 million.
