Description: Robyn Cohen sued Donald Sterling on breach of contract, breach of the warranty of habitability and intentional infliction of emotional distress theories claiming that she was injured and damages as a result of an electrical fire that occurred on September 28,2009 in the apartment that she rented from Sterling. She claimed that Sterling's building did not have a fully functioning fire detection system. She claimed that she suffered a trauma that hurt her acting career.

Defendant denied wrongdoing and contested damages. Defendant, who owns many buildings in the Los Angeles area and an NBA franchise claimed that he delegated responsibility for the maintenance and operation of the apartment building where Plaintiff lived to others.

Outcome: Plaintiff's verdict for $17.3 million including $15 million in punitive damages.
