The Publisher

Born in Tulsa to a military family, Maria traveled throughout the United States until 1982, when she returned to Tulsa to care for an ailing family member.

Maria Barnes has volunteered for many and varied committees and boards over the past 15 years. She also held several posts with Neighborhood Associations. Barnes worked hard to help generate the 1988 Kendall-Whittier Master Plan which has grown the area to its present development. She has even received the City of Tulsa Picket Fence Award for neighborhood volunteers.

Barnes has also worked on the Human Rights Commission since 2000, the Police Community Relations Committee, the Police Oversight Committee, and graduated from the Citizens Police Academy. As for service to help the entire City of Tulsa, she was a member of the Tulsa Infill Study Task Force, the 2005 Tulsa Public Schools Citizens Bond Committee and was a recent member of the Vision 2025 Tulsa Neighborhood Fund Task Force. Her current “occupation” outside of the Council is wife (for 20 years to Tulsan, James Barnes), mother and neighborhood advocate.
