Mazzarella, Daral B. - San Diego, CA Thorsnes Bartolotta McGuire When Daral Mazzarella was a high school science teacher, he enjoyed helping students negotiate their way through the maze of physical and biological laws to achieve understanding of the subject matter. Today, Daral likes to do the same thing with a completely different class of people - members of the jury. His specialties include medical malpractice, personal injury, product liability, insurance bad faith, business litigation and construction defects. 11 years of teaching biology, chemistry and other sciences for the Sweetwater Union High School District before becoming an attorney in 1986 helped Daral develop the ability to sense when a jury is confused or needs more information to understand the finer points of a case. He particularly enjoys trying cases where simplifying highly technical subject matter is a key aspect of success. Daral says, "Effective communication with a jury requires a variety of modalities to present evidence. Some people are very visual; they absorb predominately through their eyes. Other people are very tactile; it helps if they can touch something, manipulate it. Other people are mainly auditory; just by listening, their minds absorb. Ideally evidence should be presented in all these modalities to reach everyone." Daral’s formal education in the life and physical sciences, including anatomy, physiology, chemistry and physics, is of great benefit in his practice; especially in the areas of medical malpractice, personal injury and product liability. In addition, Daral is a licensed general contractor with hands-on construction experience that proves invaluable on construction defect cases. Daral’s recreational interests - motorcycle riding, mountaineering, and furniture building - demand many of the qualities that Daral utilizes in the courtroom. He knows the value of carefully planning how to accomplish a task while remaining flexible enough to change plans when circumstances require it. He appreciates the value of meticulous attention to detail, and he knows how to see a task through to completion. With such qualities it is no wonder that Daral was able to attend the University of San Diego’s Law School at night while teaching full-time (nearly 200 students each day), working as a part-time law clerk, helping staff the Law Review and still graduate Magna Cum Laude in 1986. Daral’s professional affiliations include California and San Diego Consumer Attorneys Associations, Association of Trial Lawyers of America, American Bar Association, International Association of Building Officials, and others. Daral and his wife, Pam, have two beautiful young children, a son and a daughter, whom they take great pride and pleasure in. In addition, Daral has two grown children, also a son and a daughter, he is extremely proud of. Close relationships with three brothers make it clear that family is central to Daral’s life.
